Creating A Sacred Space

Creating A Sacred Space

Creating a sacred space helps to create an inspiring, quiet spot for the soul purpose (see what I did there?) of sitting with yourself and the Divine. It does not need to imply an affiliation with any religion, rather it follows whatever practice feels right to you. It allows you have an on-going, dedicated space to retreat to where you are welcome to:

*Just kidding. I wanted to make sure that you were still reading.

Whatever gets you centered and allows you to tune into YOU is what happens in this Sacred Space. It can be as basic as your favorite cozy chair, a corner of a room, or as I prefer, an actual physical space that you can retreat to and tend to your soul whenever needed.

Remember that it’s your space so it needs to be suited for YOU. You are creating a place that honors you just as much as the spirit.

CREATING A SACRED SPACE

For those of you interested in making an actual personalized space, here are my FIVE Sacred Space “S” recommendations (trying saying that fast 5 times) for designing a powerful Sacred Space. Remember you are not limited to or even require any of the following:

  1. SENSE OF TOUCH
  2. SOUND
  3. SMELL
  4. SIGHT
  5. SPIRITUAL SYMBOLS

1. CREATING YOUR OWN SACRED SPACE WITH SENSE OF TOUCH

You want this space to be comfortable, cozy, and most of all inviting. That is why creating a Sacred Space that is personalized to your likes and interests is most key! You are the one sitting here so allow your creativity and spirituality to be expressed. Things to consider when creating an inviting environment with your Sacred Space are:

  • mediation/prayer cushions
  • yoga blanket
  • prayer rug

2. CREATING YOUR OWN SACRED SPACE WITH SOUND

I am a big proponent for creating a relaxing environment in my Sacred Space. This is why music is so important to me. Not only do I love it but I find it incredibly healing. I have created my own playlist that ushers me right into the mood. Ways you can create sound for your Sacred Space are:

3. CREATING YOUR OWN SACRED SPACE WITH SMELL

  • incense
  • sage
  • palo santo
  • essential oils
  • candles
  • matches

4. CREATING YOUR OWN SACRED SPACE WITH SIGHT

5. CREATING YOUR OWN SACRED SPACE WITH SYMBOLS

These can be spiritual in nature or simply reminders of what is important to you in your life.

  • religious statues (like Buddha, Jesus, Hindu gods/goddesses, etc)
  • photos of loved ones (passed on and living)
  • healing crystals
  • oracle cards
  • mala/prayer beads
  • offering bowls
  • smudge kits
  • feathers
  • abalone shell

Above all else, remember: THERE ARE NO RULES. These are simply guidelines to help you with creating your own sacred space but it’s always up to you to make it what you want.
